Losing display sync

My mintbox arrived last week and, to save money, I bought a Startech displayport-to-vga adapter.
First boot went just fine, connected a 3TB USB3 drive and started copying my video library onto it.
At some point the system blanked the screen, by dropping the SYNC signal.
Now usually pressing a key on the keyboard or moving the mouse will bring this back.
Not here.
Eventually, after waiting for the 1.8TB copy to complete, I rebooted the system via ssh connection.
The display *still* did not come back.
I've even tried powering the box off and on.
No display, so now I have no idea what the box is doing as it doesn't seem to get as far as connecting to the network.
This is amazingly frustrating.
Anyone any suggestions?
